CAMPION'S bid to avenge their defeat from last season and take the West Riding County Amateur League Premier Division Cup away from Halifax-based rivals Ovenden West Riding got off to a great start at Storthes Hall.

Steve Hollingworth took advantage of sloppy Ovenden defending to give his side the lead but West Riding, who were seeking a fourth successive triumph in the event, did not let that early setback deter them and went in front through Andy Bailey and Jay Carney.

Campion had many chances to level via Hollingworth and Omar Habeeb but they were thwarted by keeper Chris Moroney before Bailey took advantage of a slip by the Campion shot-stopper and scored his second to secure a 3-1 victory.

In the league, West Riding scored over 100 goals but it was only good enough for fourth place in the top flight as Bay Athletic snatched the title away from Huddersfield rivals Golcar United by winning five games in 11 days.

Campion, on the back of firepower from Hollingworth, Jordan Missin and Habeeb and 14 clean sheets, were again third but managed 87 goals – 26 more than last season.

Steeton slipped two places from the previous season to seventh but still managed to finish in the top half, while Salts – who played all their home games at Marley Stadium while Salts Sports Ground was being upgraded to meet new criteria – were eighth.

Hunsworth, promoted from Division One, finished tenth on 28 points – but that was still 20 ahead of bottom-placed Tyersal, who had a nightmare season. They failed to win at home and only triumphed once on their travels, at Kirkburton in their opening game of the season in August!

Ventus-Yeadon Celtic, fourth last season, improved to second in Division One behind Wakefield City, while Dudley Hill Rangers – after being promoted from Division Two – finished third after spending long spells at the top.

Wibsey could not improve on last season and ended in eighth, while West Horton, who changed their name to Bradford Horton Sports at the start of the season, moved up to fourth.

The reserve teams of Premier Division trio Campion, Steeton and Storthes Hall all ended up in the bottom three.

Two of the three new teams brought into Division Two – Huddersfield-based Honley and Leeds side Gildersome Spurs Old Boys – proved to be head and shoulders above most of what were predominately reserve sides, finishing second and first respectively.

Gildersome bagged 136 goals from their 20 games but still finished two points behind Honley.

The league's divisional cup finals, contested in the final week of the season, sprung a few surprises.

Bay Athletic Reserves, who had twice lost in the league to Gildersome, won a penalty shoot-out 5-4 to clinch the Division Two Cup after the game finished 1-1 after extra time.

Lepton Highlanders held on to lift the Division One Cup 1-0 over league champions Wakefield City.

Salts carried the league banner in the West Riding County FA Challenge Cup with victories over Thornhill, Whitkirk Wanderers, Steeton and Boroughbridge before losing in the semi-finals to eventual winners Oxenhope Recreation.

Bay Athletic lifted the Huddersfield & District FA Cup, after beating Shelley 6-0 in a replay, while Ovenden West Riding defeated Brighouse Town Reserves 2-1 in the Halifax & District FA Cup final 2-1 after extra time.
