NEIL Redfearn believes Leeds United are still undecided about whether to keep him on as head coach ahead of what could be his final game in charge.
The former academy manager’s contract expires at the end of the season as the Whites prepare to bring down the curtain on a tumultuous campaign at home to Rotherham.
Redfearn has guided Leeds to safety this season and admits he would love to stay on at the club he has supported since childhood.
But he said he would also need assurances from owner Massimo Cellino that assistant Steve Thompson would be reinstated after he was suspended at the start of April without Redfearn’s knowledge.
Redfearn said: “I’m a professional person and I understand how football works but I’d love to be in charge next season.
“That goes without saying as I can see the way forward.
“I want to be here but it seems like they’re undecided, otherwise they’d have told me.
“It would be good if I could get Steve back. That for me would be a big plus. It’s important for me to know that that would happen.”
Cellino has been granted permission from the Football League to attend Saturday’s game against the Millers, who preserved their Championship status with victory over Reading in midweek.
Cellino is currently serving a Football League ban for breaching its ‘owners and directors rules’ and his sanction is not due to end until the day after the Rotherham game.
It is not clear whether Cellino will be at Elland Road on Saturday but Redfearn is expected to receive strong vocal backing from Leeds fans.
He added: “In six years I’ve never known a point where the supporters are so close to the club and the players.
“We need to make decisions quickly. Whether I’m here or not we’ve got to plan for next season because good players will get snapped up.”
