BAILDON Trinity Athletic's hopes of promotion from Division Two of the West Yorkshire League suffered a setback as they lost 3-2 at home to Sherburn White Rose – a result that saw Sherburn crowned as champions.
Athletic started well and created a host of chances, with Andrew Radosevic, Ben Craven and Louis Francis prominent, but it was the visitors who opened the scoring after half an hour.
Baildon, who had dominated the first half, were unlucky to go in 1-0 down – but it got worse when a Sherburn forward's header into the top corner made it 2-0.
Francis gave Athletic a lifeline with a piece of individual brilliance, firing home right-footed from inside the area to make it 2-1.
But a counter-attack down the left wing led to Sherburn leading 3-1 before hard-working Baildon replied through the unlikely source of right back Lee Rands from the corner of the box.
This led to a nail-biting last five minutes as Trinity pressed for an equaliser, sending cross after cross into the Sherburn area.
A host of half-chances were unfortunately spurned, including a John O'Connell header being cleared off the line.
While Sherburn celebrated at the final whistle, Baildon reflected on what is now an uphill battle for promotion with two games remaining.
In a top-of-the-table Division One promotion clash, third-placed Wyke Wanderers drew 1-1 at second-placed Pool.
Pool converted a penalty early in the second half but Wyke grabbed an equaliser when a corner caused havoc in the opposition goalmouth and Gavin Turner headed home.
Both sides pushed for a winner, and Pool hit a post, but Wanderers defended well to earn a deserved point.
Steve Hamilton was on target for Field Reserves in their 1-1 draw against Boroughbridge Reserves in an Alliance Division One mid-table stalemate.
