THE battle for the championship and runners-up spots in the West Riding County Amateur League PREMIER DIVISION will go all the way to the final matches, with Bay Athletic hoping to sneak under the radar and pip leaders Golcar United to the post.
Golcar, with two goals from Callum Meade and another from Dean Siddiq, won 3-1 win at Salts, who replied through Joe Pleasance, to move to within six points of lifting the trophy for only the second time.
Campion stay second, ten points behind, after a 4-0 midweek win over Hunsworth and a 4-1 home victory against Lower Hopton, with Steve Hollingworth and Andy Benjamin netting two apiece.
Bay Athletic, who have played four fewer matches than Campion and Golcar, remain six points adrift of the Manningham-based side in third place after spiking any hope hosts Ovenden West Riding may have had of lifting the trophy for the second successive season – a Nathan James second-half goal giving Bay a 1-0 victory.
Steeton, who had a consolation goal from Andy Holden in their 3-1 defeat at Storthes Hall, could have a say in the destination of the honours as they meet the current top four in their remaining six league games.
Kirkburton’s 3-2 success at Littletown condemned Tyersal to last place in the division.
Ventus Yeadon Celtic returned to the top of DIVISION ONE after strikes from Terry Hargreaves and Adam Turner gave them a 2-1 home win over Thornes, while Wakefield City had to settle for a point with a 2-2 draw at Wibsey, with Philip Brogan and Daniel O’Donnell scoring for Wibsey and Aaron Hurst and Rob Bloomfield being on target for City.
Bottom-placed Campion Reserves gave themselves a lifeline with a 2-1 victory at Westbrook YMCA, Josh Ludford and Maldini Nyandoro netting for the winners.
Tyersal Reserves joined their first team in finishing the season bottom after they lost 3-1 at Lower Hopton Reserves in their penultimate game of their DIVISION TWO season.
At the top of the table, it looks like two of the three teams who joined the league at the start of the season will be promoted.
Gildersome Spurs Old Boys and Honley, who moved into second with a 3-0 victory at Bradford, lead the way.
