FLEETWOOD may have never beaten City but they won’t be intimidated at all by Valley Parade tomorrow.
The Cod Army’s only previous visit ended in a 1-0 defeat at the start of City’s momentuous 2012-2013 campaign. The Bantams drew 2-2 at Highbury later in the season before winning there 2-0 on Boxing Day.
But Fleetwood have shown they can handle the big stage with a recent victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. They also led 2-0 at Preston before going down to defeat.
Winger Josh Morris, their top scorer, said: “It must be mad for (the fans) to see a win at Bramall Lane, knowing where they have come from.
“To do that against Sheffield United and take the points was fantastic for us.
“To go to a place like that, a big stadium and a big crowd, and get a result – it’s a big moment. We handled it really well and showed how far we’ve come.”
Morris, who is on loan from Blackburn, believes the ambitious Fylde club can still gatecrash the play-offs in their first season in the third tier. They are currently a point ahead of the Bantams but have played twice more.
Fleetwood followed up the Bramall Lane success by beating Rochdale last weekend, the first time they have won back-to-back games since August.
But their momentum stalled in midweek with a 2-0 home loss to Coventry, with both goals coming in the last five minutes.
Skipper Mark Roberts admitted the Cod Army “dropped their guard” and is looking for a reaction at Valley Parade.
He said: “That’s the beauty with the games coming so quick. It is a great game to be playing one of the top teams in the division.
“I’m sure it will be really competitive and we’ll be up for it. We have to bounce back and dust ourselves down.”
Whatever happens, boss Graham Alexander believes the Fleetwood fans have seen enough to savour their debut League One campaign.
“We’ve just got to enjoy where we are and what we’re doing,” he said. “We’ve got nine games to go and have got to try and take as many points as possible from them.”
