COLCHESTER defender Matthew Briggs could be excused for turning up at Valley Parade tomorrow and thinking: Not again!
The left back is set for his second U’s appearance after joining from Millwall for the rest of the season.
And that means a third collision with the Bantams this month.
Briggs played in both FA Cup third-round ties for Millwall, including the 4-0 battering in the replay. So he will have a score to settle.
His debut for the Essex side went to plan with a 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Leyton Orient, which has lifted Colchester up to fourth from bottom.
Gavin Massey and Kaspars Gorkss scored to clinch a second win in three games for boss Tony Humes, who has been busy in the January transfer window.
As well as Briggs, he has already snapped up Sheffield United striker Chris Porter and defender Alex Wynter from Crystal Palace on permanent deals. Ipswich front man Jack Marriott is another loan capture.
Porter was brought in to replace Freddie Sears, who left for Ipswich for an undisclosed fee. Jabo Ibehre, who scored against City in October during a loan spell with Oldham, is back with the U’s but they are also trying to move him on.
Colchester keeper Sam Walker, a former Chelsea trainee, is hoping they can catch City still on cloud nine after their FA Cup triumph.
Walker, who spent seven years at Stamford Bridge without playing a senior game, said: “Bradford had a superb result last weekend but that could go one of two ways.
“It might give them a boost but on the other hand they could maybe take their foot off the gas a bit. We shall see.
“We’ve got 20 games left, which means 60 points to play for.
“We will certainly be looking to get a positive result. It’s been a bit of a problem this season, stringing them together.
“We’ve had the odd good result but then taken a step backwards.”
Elliott Hewitt starts a three-game ban for his late red card against Orient so one-time Leeds winger Sanchez Watt is set to deputise.
