Brighouse Town 3 Salford City 1
WHILE the Bantams were producing their amazing cup victory over Chelsea, Brighouse Town created an upset of their own when they beat Evo-Stik First Division North leaders Salford City.
Town’s visitors are part-owned by five of Manchester United’s ‘class of 92’ and are hot favourites to win the title.
They had beaten Town’s neighbours Farsley 3-2 the previous Saturday to stay at the summit but were displaced following defeat at lower mid-table Brighouse and finished the game with nine men.
Town opened the scoring midway through the first half when Leon Henry pounced to fire in after a goalmouth scramble.
Salford equalised just before the break when Gareth Seddon netted a cool finish following a corner. However, it all went wrong for Salford eight minutes after the interval when full back Lee Neville was handed a straight red card.
They conceded a penalty four minutes later and Ernest Boafo lashed the spot-kick in to put the home side back in front and Ryan Hall lobbed the visitors’ keeper to put the gloss on Town’s victory.
To rub salt into their wounds, the visitors had Jason Jarrett dismissed in stoppage time for a second yellow-card offence.
Town chairman Ray McLaughlin said: “Both of the Nevilles, Gary and Phil, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt were there and Twitter was going mad with it all morning, hence the crowd of 515.
“It was a magnificent result and a good day all round. I know the Bantams had a great win but I still think we deserve the headlines!”
