THE Dennyboys’ long awaited home game last Saturday was a non-event after the excessively wet January weather caused a postponement.
Thackley should have hosted Barton Town Old Boys and it would have been their first at Dennyfield since the visit of Retford United back on November 22. They were due to host Armthorpe Welfare on December 6 but that also fell to a waterlogged pitch.
It has been no secret that Thackley have been through torrid times but without the stalwarts that keep the club going it would probably no longer exist.
Former committee men have returned to ensure the club continues its fine tradition.
Most of them had left their roles initially, after many years of service, to spend more time with their families in their retirement years.
One of them, former secretary Mick Lodge, said: “We were up at the ground early on Saturday doing what we could with the pitch, hoping to get the game on, but we were beaten by the weather unfortunately.
“There was standing water and we tried to fork the pitch but there are too many rocks and hard, clay-like areas.
“The forks won’t go in deep enough so the water can’t drain away.
“The pitch needs extensive work on it because it’s a few seasons since it had a lot done on it in the summer. But we haven’t got the resources and that isn’t just the money.
“It would cost a lot to do what’s needed but we just don’t have the manpower even if we had the funds.
“There are just six of us running it now, all the old guard from a few years back.
“We could do with some volunteers coming forward to increase the numbers.
“Anyone with time on their hands or who could make time for the local football club would be more than welcome.”
