BILLY Knott reckons he can learn to be more than just a “home boy” in Phil Parkinson’s plans.

The bubbly midfielder kept up his lucky scoring tag with the winner against Notts County on Sunday. All four of his goals so far have led to City victories.

But he’s keen to shed another less wanted mantle – that he’s only suited to playing at Valley Parade.

Knott has not started an away game since the FA Cup first round at Halifax as Parkinson opts for Andy Halliday’s more disciplined approach in the middle on City’s travels.

The 22-year-old is determined to convince his manager he is worth sticking with outside BD8 – and Millwall tomorrow would be the perfect place to start.

Knott said: “I think the gaffer trusts Andy a bit more defensively when we go away from home.

“I don’t really like it but I don’t get the hump too much and that’s the sign of a good squad. The gaffer has got to pick a team for each individual game.

“Everyone knows I’ve got to work on my defensive side but I’m trying hard with Parky. Hopefully when he wants to pick me for an away game, I can prove I can do that job.

“I like the role I played against Notts County in behind (the strikers). It’s unfortunate Yeatesy (Mark Yeates) was not in there but I linked up well with Jon Stead and James Hanson.

“I had a point to prove to the gaffer because obviously I hadn’t played the away game at Fleetwood and really enjoyed it. Hopefully I’ve done enough to stay in the starting line-up this weekend.”

The trip to the Den may not have got many Bantam pulses racing but Knott was thrilled by the draw. As a West Ham fan, Millwall away is a biggie.

He can expect plenty of personal backing – his friends and family are expected to be out in force from Essex.

“Everyone from Canvey Island is a massive West Ham fan,” he said. “There will be a lot of people going over although mum’s a bit worried about the hostile atmosphere.

“Hopefully my grandpa can make it as well. He’s gone down with cancer lately but he wants to go and it would be great if he can drag my grandma out with him.

“I’ve never played at Millwall before. I’ve never even been there before – but then as a West Ham fan, I didn’t want to!

“But I’m really looking forward to it. I put it on Twitter that I was buzzing when we got Millwall and everyone else was saying that it was a rubbish draw!

“I think it’s a winnable game. They aren’t doing too well and we’re flying at the moment so we’ll give anyone in the league above a good game.

“I have no doubt we will match them for work rate because we are up there with the fittest and we’re a very confident squad right now.

“There’s a buzz around the place and everyone’s doing their bit.

“Sheez (Alan Sheehan) has been frustrated to be out the side but he came on last weekend. He put his first touch into the stand but it was great to see him back and hopefully he’ll have a little run now.

“JK (Jason Kennedy) has been coming off the bench to help us grind out the wins at the end. We’re all involved.”
