ALBION SPORTS punished Armthorpe Welfare in the second half to run out comfortable 3-0 winners in the Toolstation Northern Counties East Premier Division.
Kulwinder Sandhu’s men were expected to beat their third-from-bottom hosts but the first half did not go to plan.
The Armthorpe keeper made a fine save to prevent Danny Facey converting a late first-half penalty as the sides reached the break goalless.
Albion did make the breakthrough early in the second half when Matt Mathers headed home a Lee Elam cross. The visitors had to bide their time before making the game safe though, two goals in the last four minutes easing Albion over the line.
Brice Tiani carved out his own opportunity before slotting in and Elam netted just into time added on.
Sandhu said: “It was a good win for us and I thought we played well. Armthorpe may be low in the table but they made it difficult for us and their keeper made a good save to keep out Danny’s penalty after the handball in the area.
“There was good work from Lee to get the cross in for Matt to score our first goal and Brice did really well for his goal and then Lee added that late third. We are happy to take the points from a tricky game.”
Counterparts LIVERSEDGE wasted several chances before slipping to a 2-1 defeat at second-bottom Glasshoughton Welfare.
Adam Smith gave Sedge a sixth-minute lead but they held that for only six minutes before Jimmy Dyson levelled.
The visitors squandered chances to snatch the lead back and Kingsley Weatherald won it for Glasshoughton 13 minutes from time.
In Division One, ECCLESHILL UNITED also suffered an away defeat, going down 1-0 at Pontefract Collieries.
It was a close game but Ponte, four places higher than 11th-placed Eccleshill, won it with Mark Whitehouse’s late strike.
It was new Eagles head coach Gerard Jones’ first game in charge. He said: “To be honest, we should have won it. We were the better side and we played the better football but I think we lacked that edge up front.”
