A dreadful second half of the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division season blighted the Dennyboys’ campaign, and they finished in the bottom half of the table after being genuine title contenders up until the turn of the year.
Thackley were still as high as fourth on the first day of February, and stayed there with a 4-1 win at Maltby Main. However, their next maximum did not come until March 22.
The 1-0 home win over Glasshoughton Welfare on that Saturday was one of just three wins in their last 16 games.
During that spell, they surrendered their grip on the League Cup. Holders for two years, they went out in the quarter-finals after a heavy defeat at Heanor Town.
There was little joy in the major cup competitions as the Dennyboys went out of the FA Cup in the extra-preliminary round and the West Riding County FA Cup in the first round.
They had a good run in the FA Vase though, reaching the third round before suffering a 1-0 defeat at Ashington.
The season will be remembered for the change of manager as Lee Clapham lost his job, ironically after one of the three victories in the last two months of the campaign.
Clapham had Dave Morgan as his joint manager but he resigned following Clapham’s contentious departure.
The former insisted he had been sacked, while the official line from the club was that he had quit. Either way it seemed that some of the committee had lost faith in Clapham and wanted him out.
The Dennyboys appointed former striker Andy Patterson on a temporary basis.
The former Bantams youth enjoyed his brief cameo and, after spells managing Thackley’s reserves and being assistant first-team manager at Eccleshill United, he was ready for the role.
The club asked him to be the next permanent boss, and he agreed, so will be at the helm next season.
