Two key Premier Division games were postponed as bad weather returned to further delay the West Riding County Amateur League’s attempts to wrap up the season.
The heavy rain that caused many grounds to be waterlogged in the opening months of the year, leaving a number of clubs way behind schedule, was back with a vengeance.
Friday evening saw Hall Green United, who needed at least a point from their final home game against Tyersal to effectively guarantee not being relegated, forced to call off the fixture.
Second-placed Bay Athletic’s ground then suffered the same fate when their home match against second-bottom Halifax Irish was ruled unplayable on Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile, leaders Ovenden West Riding knew that only a win at home to Storthes Hall in their penultimate league fixture, before ending the campaign at Steeton tomorrow night, would keep the pressure on title rivals Bay.
They duly won comfortably 5-2 thanks to an Andy Bailey double, backed up by goals from John Booth, Jordan Coduri and Matt Jones.
Alex Slack and a Lee Bradshaw penalty reduced the arrears for fourth-placed Storthes Hall.
The result means that if Ovenden beat Steeton they will be crowned champions as it would leave them ten points clear of Bay, who have three games still to play.
Ventus-Yeadon Celtic concluded on a high note with victory at Steeton Reserves to finish fourth in Division One.
It finished 3-0 and Ventus will no doubt be reflecting on what might have been as, for over half of the season, they were challenging for one of the two promotion places.
West Horton also finished their season with a positive outcome as a 5-0 win at Storthes Hall Reserves ensured they finished in the top half.
Lee Smith scored twice, with Kamran Khan, Tahir Khan and Mudajar Rajas also on target, to complete a solid campaign after being moved up a division at the end of last season.
Wakefield City’s 4-0 home win over Salts Reserves sent their Saltaire opponents back into the bottom section alongside Bay Athletic Reserves.
Littletown Reserves booked their place in the Division Two Cup final with a resounding 6-0 victory over Kirkburton Reserves.
Joe Broadhead and George Porter both scored twice, with Stanford Bube and Ashton Vlahovic completing the tally. Littletown will now meet Hall Green United Reserves in the showpiece decider at Overthorpe SC next Tuesday.
