Histon 1 Guiseley 1
Guiseley missed the chance to build on last Tuesday’s win at promotion-chasing Brackley when they were held to a draw at struggling Histon.
The Lions had boosted their late charge for a play-off spot in the Conference North with a superb victory at Brackley but failed to emulate that with a second consecutive long-haul success.
Histon have had as many problems with the weather as Guiseley and the pitch was not the best, affecting the quality of football on show, and the first half was very much a non-event.
Histon striker Adi Yussuf forced Lions keeper Steve Drench into a parry while Jake Lawlor fired just wide at the other end.
The second half was as much a battle against the conditions as against the opposition, with both sides continuing to struggle.
The game burst into life with two late goals and the outcome was not settled until the last of the four minutes of stoppage time.
Guiseley substitute Oli Johnson had created a superb chance for himself but shot agonisingly wide just before Histon broke the deadlock in the 79th minute. Nathan Hicks whipped in a cross and both he and home substitute Michael Built, who may have got a faint touch, claimed the strike.
Lions substitute Alex Johnson headed the equaliser five minutes later, converting Wayne Brooksby’s free-kick.
Oli Johnson could have won it with another great chance and Drench had to make a save deep into time added on to ensure Guiseley got a point.
Lions boss Mark Bower said: “We had two glorious chances in the second half before they scored and if we had got our noses in front I think we would have gone on to win it.
“Despite their position in the league its not an easy place to go, teams don’t get too many results down there. Ideally we wanted to win it and we had chances to win it but it wasn’t to be and we will take the point.”
