Bradford City’s rousing 7-0 FA Women’s Cup win over Blackpool Wren Rovers has put them in good heart for the next stage of their cup ‘double’ quest on Sunday when they are scheduled to take on Southern Premier League leaders Cardiff City in round three at Thackley.
“To say we hadn’t played since before Christmas I couldn’t fault the performance,” said a delighted coach Steve Winterburn after the Blackpool rout, which was played on the artificial turf at Woodhouse Grove.
“All the hard training in the last six weeks, the pre-match preparation and sticking to the game-plan paid dividends.
“The girls have trained hard again this week and they are really looking forward to the Cardiff game.”
Blackpool were never in contention in last week’s match. Rachel Lee opened the scoring for City in the 12th minute and less than 30 minutes later it was 5-0 as Sarah Danby, Abby Hunt, Charlotte Stuart and Becky Kendell each got their name on the scoresheet.
After the break City added two more through Danby and Molly Sharpe to complete the scoring and confirm their superiority.
The continued delay in completing their FA Cup commitments has left City with an increasing fixture backlog that includes their West Riding County FA Cup clash with Leeds City Vixens.
As well as the Cardiff game tomorrow it is also a big cup week for City’s reserves and A team. The reserves are at home to Nottingham Forest in the Reserve Division Cup and the A team, who currently lead Division Three, are defending a 100 per cent record in all competitions with a West Riding League Cup game at home to Division Two side Dewsbury Rangers.
In the West Riding Premier, Bradford Park Avenue travel to bottom club Ossett Town.
