Last Saturday may have ended with a home defeat for Guiseley but it began well with two players making their home debuts.
Forwards Oli Johnson and Adam Boyes were both turning out for the Lions at Nethermoor for the first time, with Boyes having already made a swift impression at his new club by scoring in his second game.
After making his debut at Barrow, one of his former clubs, Boyes converted a corner on the stroke of half-time in the 4-2 defeat at AFC Telford United the previous weekend.
Former Norwich City, Oxford United and Stockport County man Johnson is yet to open his account but he made a bright start against Worcester City. He was tricky and lively before being taken off at the end of the goalless first half.
Guiseley boss Mark Bower said: “Oli has not played a lot of football recently because of injury and, with playing on that heavy pitch, we decided to just give him 45 minutes.
“Even fully match-fit players were struggling in those difficult conditions and it can lead to injuries in the groin or hamstring and that is the area Oli has had trouble with, so we took that into account.
“He showed some very good signs on Saturday, which is not a surprise because he is a good player. He linked up well with the other forwards, created chances, beat defenders and generally made things happen.
“He has a good pedigree and has played up the leagues but he lacks match fitness at the moment. We have to be careful and manage him through that now so that Oli and the club can reap the rewards down the line.”
Kevin Holsgrove has also returned to the club this week on loan from FC Halifax Town, who he joined when they gained promotion last term. Holsgrove was originally signed by Steve Kittrick from Colwyn Bay in his native Wales.
