Phil Parkinson today surveyed his mid-season City shake-up and admitted: We needed that.
Doncaster right winger Kyle Bennett and Huddersfield midfielder Chris Atkinson yesterday followed Middlesbrough’s Adam Reach to Valley Parade.
Jason Kennedy, who has found it difficult to adapt since his summer switch from Rochdale, also returned to Spotland on a busy day of transfer-window movement.
With Aaron Mclean braced for his home debut on Tuesday after replacing Nahki Wells, it is suddenly becoming some transformation for a squad that has remained almost untouched since winning promotion.
But Parkinson felt it was required after a barren run of only one win from the last 17 games which has seen City dip below mid-table.
He said: “We’ve had a bit of a change-round. Bringing in a couple of fresh faces alters the dynamic of the place a little bit and that can give everyone a lift.
“I still want to get a left back in if we can. I haven’t been able to get the one I want for various reasons but hopefully it will happen next week.”
Once tipped as a potential superstar coming up through the academy ranks at Wolves, Bennett cut his teeth with Bury before joining Doncaster in July 2011.
But the 23-year-old has been limited to just four substitute appearances this season since Paul Dickov came in and spent a month in League One on loan at Crawley.
Bennett, on loan until May, will push Garry Thompson for the starting role on City’s right.
Despite playing regularly, Thompson has not been able to rediscover his impressive form from the second half of last season. But the lack of competition for his place has been a concern.
The fact that Parkinson has brought in two wingers this week would suggest that Mark Yeates has failed to convince his manager that he is worth a full-time recall.
Raffaele De Vita is still side-lined after suffering a setback with his thigh injury.
Aston Villa teenager Jordan Graham joined a fortnight ago on a month’s youth loan but is yet to appear, with Parkinson stressing he was brought in as an “impact” option rather than a potential starter.
The City boss added: “Jordan came in on the day we sold Nahki at a time when we were down to only 14 or 15 fit players. We needed an impact player with an attacking threat on the bench.
“Unfortunately, he hasn’t got on because Reidy (Kyel Reid) has got injuries in both games and we’ve had to change things.
“But Jordan’s only a young kid and you’ve got to be careful with the expectations on him.
“Kyle has obviously got a lot more experience and that’s why we’ve got him in.
“He’s played about 70 games in his time at Doncaster and he’s been on loan this season with Crawley. He’s quick and will offer good competition.”
Central midfielder Atkinson, 21, is also with City until the end of the season after playing 28 games on loan for Tranmere, scoring three. He scored five times in 16 games during a stint with Chesterfield last term.
Parkinson said: “We’ve got a lot of games coming up and with Jason going, I felt it was important to get another midfield player in.
“Chris has played a lot of first-team football this year. He’s a good young player with good energy.
“His contract’s coming up in the summer. He’s someone to come in now and compete for a place but also we can have one eye on the future.”
