Grangefield Old Boys were indebted to goalkeeper Phil Gill as they earned a penalty shoot-out victory over Huddersfield Amateur in the Terry Marflitt Trophy quarter-finals.

Gill, on his return from injury, saved the second spot-kick diving to the right and followed this up by plunging to his left to hold another well-struck effort.

Richard Banks, Matt Tomlinson, Grant Jackson and Luke Hunter were on target for Grangefield as they won the decider 4-2 after a classic cup tie between the two Yorkshire Amateur League high-fliers had finished level at 3-3.

Banks had equalised five minutes from the end of extra time to force the shoot-out having earlier made it 2-2 as his side twice recovered from falling behind in 90 minutes, with Tom Pickup having supplied the first leveller.

Meanwhile, Farsley Juniors finally ended the run of giant-killers Leeds City OB, who were 51 places lower on the league ladder. It finished 4-1 as Craig Farrand and Ben Cooke both scored twice to earn a last-four place.

League action saw St Bede’s still looking for their first win of the season as they lost 4-2 at home to Senior B division promotion hopefuls Wigton Moor.

St Bede’s trailed 3-0 with five minutes to go and although two quick goals from Ryan O’Donnell and Ty Akram gave them hope, Leroy Watson’s second of the game ended any hopes of snatching a point.

Down in Division Three, Heckmondwike GSOB’s rise from the basement to mid-table respectability was derailed 5-2 at Norristhorpe, who are sixth.

Heckmondwike would have leapfrogged their opponents with a win but could only manage goals from Adam Mackereth and Darren Harwood as James Scurrah plundered four for the hosts.
