Campion took full advantage of playing in one of just a handful of matches involving West Riding County Amateur League sides to survive the ongoing bad weather.

Last year had ended with only seven games being played and 2014 began with six grounds being fit for action as heavy rain again decimated the fixture list.

Campion had suffered a 5-0 home drubbing by Tyersal in their first Premier Division match of the season back in August but gained a 2-1 success in the return fixture at the weekend.

That lifted them up to sixth place, just five points adrift of leaders Ovenden West Riding, and leaves neighbours Tyersal struggling towards the lower end of the table.

Jordan Missin’s goal gave Campion a first-half advantage before Glynn Beale equalised to put his side back in with a chance of completing the double over their local rivals.

But Andy Atkinson responded with what proved to be the winner as Campion shattered the home side’s hopes.

The only other top-flight game to be played saw Kirkburton climb into second place, one point behind Ovenden, after recovering from a 2-1 interval deficit to record a 3-2 home victory at home to basement side Hall Green United.

Goals from Carl Sykes, Scott Sykes and Jack Greene sealed the points after Clinton Firth and Mathew Marsden had given Hall Green the early initiative.

A single match in Division One saw bottom side Overthorpe give themselves a chance of avoiding a second successive relegation with a 2-1 home win over promotion contenders Wakefield City.

Paul Hodgson and James Wilson netted for the Dewsbury-based hosts, with Paul Scott providing the consolation.

Just one other league game took place and this saw Dudley Hill Rangers return to the top of Division Two ahead of DRAM Community, whose home game against Littletown Reserves was postponed.

Rangers eased to a 4-1 home victory over mid-table Kirkburton Reserves, with Chris Gibbons, Mark Wilcox, Mathew Knowles and substitute Roman Zuric scoring the goals.

Meanwhile, quarter-final places in the West Riding County FA Challenge Cup were up for grabs and were taken by County Amateur League duo Bay Athletic and Ovenden West Riding.

Bay edged out Yorkshire Amateur League opponents Gildersome Spurs 2-1 after extra time thanks to goals by Chris Burns and Daniel Steele, with Matty Moon replying.

And Ovenden hit back after falling behind to an early Alex Slack goal for Premier Division rivals Storthes Hall to win by the same score as Jordan Corduri struck twice in the last 20 minutes.

Steeton’s home tie against Oxenhope Recreation was a victim of the weather and has been rearranged for this coming Saturday.

Campion Reserves bowed out of the West Riding County FA Challenge Trophy when they were beaten 4-1 by West Yorkshire League visitors Rothwell Town.

Chris Graham scored for Campion just before half-time after Rothwell had built up a 2-0 advantage.

But a determined Rothwell defence denied the Bradford side any further reward and their attack also came out on top with goals from Joshua Knaggs (2), Paul Bjelic and Will Harrison.
