Just six of the West Riding County Amateur League matches scheduled for the weekend survived the heavy overnight rain that left many grounds waterlogged.

The only game in the Premier Division was between Tyersal and Steeton at Arkwright Street, and Steeton moved from seventh up to third on the back of a 5-1 victory.

Steeton, who entertain leaders Ovenden West Riding on Saturday and are only a point behind them, adapted to the heavy conditions better than their hosts, and with two goals from Andy Holden to complement others from Lee Reilly, Adam Spencer and Damien Whiteoak, victory was rarely in doubt.

Damian Rushworth converted a penalty for Tyersal’s consolation.

Overthorpe Sports Club, who prop up Division One, picked up their second league win of the season, when a Jack Allerton hat-trick, two from Ashley Hill and an Elliott Brooke strike gave them a 6-3 home win over Salts Reserves, who had Chris Sykes, Richard Magson and Mat Bailey on target.

Steeton’s reserve side eased away from the bottom two with a 4-2 home success over Campion Reserves, Craig Gregory, Casey Dowthwaite, Ross Bailey and an own goal netting for Steeton, while Tom Howard and Chris Helliwell were on target for Campion.

Dudley Hill Rangers failed to take full advantage of their Division Two promotion rivals DRAM Community FC playing in the Huddersfield & District FA Cup.

Rangers had the chance to move three points clear, but slipped up 5-2 at home to Littletown Reserves, with Danny Softley and Ryan Starr scoring for Rangers, while Liam Fox and Joe Broadhead both netted twice to add to a Kurt Harris goal.

League newcomers Thornes, who are based in Wakefield, are beginning to come to terms with the higher standard of football, and with five victories in the last six games, have moved up into fourth place and within challenging distance of promotion.

Their latest victory was a 3-2 success at Kirkburton Reserves, and they had Phil Stones, Craig Stephenson and Gareth Sweeting on target.
