Albion Sports knocked Tadcaster Albion off the top of the Premier Division table with a 1-0 Toolstation Northern Counties East League win at the Brewers’ Ings Lane ground.

It was Tadcaster’s first league defeat since the opening week of the season but was one that Sports deserved from a close encounter.

The visitors created the better of the few chances that were crafted out by the equally-matched sides.

The all-important strike came just before the hour mark. A corner was not cleared by the home defence and Liam Ormsby pounced to rifle the ball home.

The result saw Sports leap from sixth place to third, with Tadcaster slipping off the summit as Barton Town Old Boys climbed above them on goal difference.

Thackley missed out on closing the gap between themselves and the pace-setters as they suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat at Basford United, who leapfrogged them into fourth place.

It was a disappointing reverse for the Dennyboys, who slipped to sixth place, after their 2-2 draw with Tadcaster last time out.

Basford took the lead through Theo Smith but the visitors were level by the break thanks to a Damian Hopkins strike.

Three late goals gave the scoreline a slant in the home side’s favour as Blair Anderson put them in the lead with nine minutes remaining before Martin Holt and Tyeisse Nightingale added in stoppage time.

Liversedge enjoyed a rare away-day success as they won 3-0 at Maltby Main.

The first half was goalless but Dominic Riordan finally broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, Brooke Newton doubled Sedge’s lead and Riordan completed the scoring.

Brighouse Town were denied the chance to close in on the leaders when their home game against struggling Parkgate was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Their inactivity saw Town drop from fifth to eighth – but they now have seven games in hand on top two Barton and Tadcaster, who are both 13 points ahead.

A depleted Eccleshill United side lost 2-0 at home to Teversal in Division One.

The home side had leading scorer Marcus Edwards missing through suspension and half a team of reserves and youth-teamers in for the RIASA players who have gone back to the United States for the Christmas holidays.
