Kyel Reid thinks it’s time to write his name on the City scoresheet more often.

The winger has never been the most prolific in front of goal, with last season’s haul of five remaining the best of his career.

But with the current campaign not yet at the halfway point, Reid is already up to four – and he is confident of continuing to push that tally.

He said: “That’s my aim and there’s no reason why I shouldn’t get more. The gaffer’s always on to me saying that I’ve got the ability and I’m probably one of the best finishers at the club.

“He thinks I should get in the box more and hit the target more – and he’s right. I’m going into each game now knowing that when I do get my chance, I’ve got to concentrate on hitting the target.

“People talk about Nahki (Wells) scoring all the time but if I can get more it gives defenders another name to think about.”

Reid had a decent attempt in Saturday’s draw with leaders Leyton Orient, seeing a fizzing drive from 25 yards tipped over the bar.

His last goal at MK Dons – an effort from the angle of the penalty area that dropped into the far corner – was played down afterwards as a cross by boss Phil Parkinson. But Reid argues it was intended – well, sort of.

He said: “I don’t really know. There was nobody in the box at the time. Hans (James Hanson) was making a late run but the keeper was trying to read the cross.

“He was anticipating coming out and gambling to try and catch the ball. I thought if I could get as much height on it as possible and aim for the far post, we’ll see where it goes.

“I nearly had another one like it against Notts County as well. Keepers are always trying to be smart, read the ball and look to catch us on the break, so they can get the ball out quicker. If you can catch them off the line, it stops them from cheating like that!”

Reid is one of the 13 senior players whose contracts are up at the end of the season. City were quick to secure Hanson’s long-term future and the winger can understand why the rest will have to wait their turn.

He said: “I haven’t heard anything as yet. There are quite a few of us who are up for grabs.

“Obviously Hans is the core of the team and such a big player for us. He’s a Bradford boy as well, so it’s good for all the supporters and his family too because they’ve just had a baby.

“This is his home and this is what he knows. I’m happy for him because he’s a very good player and he’s deserved it.”

Geography presents the biggest stumbling block for the first player Parkinson signed when he took the Valley Parade hot-seat. Reid’s girlfriend Amy and baby son IC still live in London, where she works as a model.

It is a dilemma that Reid must face if or when a new deal is put on the table.

He said: “I’ll have to sit down with my family and think about it. They are down south and I’m up here, so that’s the only thing that is worrying for me. Other than that, I’m happy at the club and with how things are going.

“The gaffer and coaching staff have been brilliant with me – especially Matt (Barrass) the physio, who I spend quite a lot of time with. He’s probably sick of seeing me!

“I just want things to continue how they are, be injury-free and build that partnership with Mezza (James Meredith) and help the team push on to where we know we can be.

“Things are going well but I still feel there’s that little extra kick to come. You get that from confidence the more games you play.

“I’m enjoying it and enjoying where we are in the league. We’re doing well. We need to get back to winning ways but we’ve come a long way from where we were this time last year.”
