Bradford Park Avenue 0 Guiseley 3
Bradford Park Avenue were overtaken in the Conference North table by neighbours Guiseley tonight and it was one of their former players who did most of the damage.
Danny Forrest bagged a brace as the Lions drew first blood in the double header between the local rivals, who meet in the FA Trophy on Saturday.
The home side were on the rack in just the third minute as Guiseley caught them cold and the visitors did not look back.
Their early goal came from a direct run by Forrest. The former Avenue and Bantams striker intercepted a ball just inside the home side’s half and raced into the area before drifting in on the inside of Jamie Price and lashing a shot from the edge of the area into the top corner.
Guiseley centre back Danny Hall earned himself a yellow card midway through the first half for a foul on Nicky Boshell.
Paul Walker fired the resulting free-kick round the wall but visiting keeper Steve Drench dived to palm it past his post.
Nicky Boshell’s brother Danny, the Lions’ assistant manager, was the next man in the referee’s book for a foul as Avenue threatened to break.
Guiseley were soon appealing for a penalty after James Knowles’ challenge on Alex Johnson but the referee wasn’t interested.
Gavin Rothery hit a snap shot that John Lamb saved and a Wayne Brooksby effort from distance clipped the top of the bar on its way over as Guiseley ended the first half strongly.
Forrest netted the second with a sublime volley after teeing himself up on a run through the inside left channel. But the striker missed a great chance to bag a hat-trick when a loose ball ran to him inside the area.
Guiseley’s third did come but it was from the spot after Knowles was adjudged to have brought Brooksby down. Rothery drilled the penalty low past Lamb.
The match then petered out, with both sides making several changes before the sides resume hostilities at Nethermoor on Saturday when a place in the last 16 of the FA Trophy is at stake.
Meanwhile, Brighouse Town will host Whickham tomorrow night in the FA Vase third-round tie that was postponed at the weekend due to a waterlogged pitch at the Dual Seal Stadium.
Following today's fourth-round draw, the winners now know they have a home tie to look forward to. West Auckland, Northern League counterparts of Whickham, will be waiting for tomorrow night’s victors.
