Andrew Davies column
It might sound biased but I genuinely think our front two are the best in the league.
The manager gets the best out of them because of the way we play. Nahki runs the channels and Hans is great with the big diagonal ball.
That’s why I think the club have done a fantastic job to tie down big James on a new contract. I’m just absolutely amazed that nobody came in and had a little gamble on him.
It’s unbelievable how much he has improved in the two-and-a-half years I’ve been at Bradford.
He’s a big, strong lad and we all know what he is like in the air – but he is also prepared to do the running and is a very good finisher. I’m very surprised that there haven’t been other clubs sniffing around.
I just hope that we can do the same with Nahki but we know it’s not going to be easy.
I feel that if Bradford want to keep moving forward, you need to keep your best players and Nahki is certainly one of them. In an ideal world, I’d do whatever it takes to keep him.
I don’t think he needs to go anywhere now. The fans love him, the gaffer loves him and the lads really like him.
He’s only 23 and his big moves and his money will come. Keep scoring goals and it doesn’t matter what team or division he’s at, clubs will be interested.
I hear people are talking about a £3million price tag for him but that will shoot up to £5-6million if he keeps scoring goals and we move up to the Championship.
You look at Dwight Gayle who went from Dagenham to Crystal Palace for £6million rising to £8million. I’ve played against them both and I don’t think he can lace Nahki’s boots.
Like myself, I think Nahki owes so much to the gaffer. He’s always on Nahki’s case, always saying he wants more because he believes in him so much.
There is no guarantee that would be the same if he moved to another club and a different manager. The grass isn’t always greener.
It’s not quite the same scenario but I left Southampton when I was about Nahki’s age to join Stoke for big money.
It was a chance to play in the Premier League but I left behind a club where the fans loved me and I got on so well with the manager.
I moved to Stoke and it just didn’t work at all. In the end I had to drop down all the way to League Two to get regular football again.
I think this free weekend has come at a good time for us. It’s massively important the lads have a good rest.
You can sense around the training ground that the boys are desperate to get some more wins.
But it’s good that everyone has this break now and the chance to recharge the batteries. It also lets those little niggles settle down.
Maybe a few lads have been trying to play through them and haven’t been feeling 100 per cent, so this break has got to be good news.
We’ve got a run of games coming up against other teams at the top and we’ll be ready for that.
