Last season’s beaten finalists Guiseley are in the last four of the West Riding County Cup after a narrow 2-1 victory over Selby Town at Nethermoor last night.
The Lions’ side had a youthful look about them for the visit of the Northern Counties East Division One outfit. Many of the senior players were on bench duty but there was an old head in goal with Steve Dickinson between the sticks.
Guiseley broke the deadlock when Ryan Williams headed them into the lead and they should have doubled their advantage soon after but Jameel Ible fired just wide on the half volley.
The home side did have the ball in the net later in the first half but Craig Hobson’s effort was ruled out.
Selby clawed their way back into the tie in the second half with a shot from Regan Kelly.
Within minutes the Lions were back in front after Jake Lawlor poked the ball in from close range following a corner.
They should have given themselves breathing space but failed to convert a later penalty.
Williams was fouled in the area by visiting keeper Lee Kelsey but the stopper went from villain to hero as he saved Craig Hobson’s spot-kick.
Holders FC Halifax Town are out after a 2-1 defeat at Harrogate Town.
Joe Ironside put the Shaymen in front in the ninth minute and they held that lead until the break.
Harrogate levelled through Ashley Worsfold and substitute Chris Hall headed the home side’s winner.
Albion Sports lost 3-1 at Ossett Albion in last night’s other quarter-final but Guiseley will be joined in the last four by one more local club as Eccleshill United host Brighouse Town tonight.
Town are on their worst run of form this season, having drawn two and lost one of their last three fixtures.
