Former Liversedge boss Eric Gilchrist hopes his relationship with the ‘fantastic club’ will not be soured by his public dispute with a few individuals.

Gilchrist was critical of some current committee members after he resigned from his post last month but he wished the club all the best. It was his second spell in the hot seat at Clayborn and he had high expectations.

He said: “I feel gutted about the way it all ended because I really thought there was something there. We felt we were attracting good players considering we had no budget.

“We worked hard and gave everything and it was great to be involved at Sedge again.

“In the couple of weeks before I left we drew at Armthorpe and then at Nostell and if we had taken six points from those two games we would have been back up in the top half.”

The second coming of Gilchrist did not pan out as hoped for as Sedge tumbled down into the bottom half of the table, although the boss and his training staff felt they were working within tight restrictions.

Gilchrist added: “I don’t know what the club wants to be honest. My remit when I came in was to keep us in the Premier Division. There is a heck of lot of competition locally and they are all paying, not big money, but decent wages.

“It doesn’t matter how well connected you are or how many favours you pull in because you can never call in enough to compete with that.

“I hope Sedge do well because it is a fantastic club but I think they need to attract some good sponsors or set more realistic targets.

“There are some great people down there but sadly there are a few behind the scenes who are not ambitious enough.

“We had a good squad of players and I hope they don’t all leave. If Sedge are challenging for promotion no one will be more delighted than me.”
