Thackley reclaimed top spot in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division after a 2-1 derby win over managerless Liversedge at Dennyfield.

Sedge opened the scoring, Billy Grogan netting in the ninth minute, but the Dennyboys soon hit back.

Chris Davey struck a 14th-minute equaliser and when he was later flattened by a clumsy challenge, Matt Morgan despatched the winner from the resulting penalty.

Liversedge were under the guidance of James Riorden, who played as well as managed the side following Eric Gilchrist’s sudden resignation last week. Riorden was assisted by the reserve-team management pairing of Paul Murphy and Dave Thompson.

There were some positives from the game for Sedge and they arguably edged the second half. But that period remained goalless despite two good late chances for the visitors.

In the closing stages Thackley felt they had a stronger penalty claim than the one that had been given earlier. Matty Hall went down under a robust challenge but the referee was not interested.

Meanwhile, Brighouse Town maintained the pressure on their neighbours at the summit with a 3-1 home win over struggling Long Eaton United.

Tom Matthews scored either side of the break to earn a two-goal cushion and Danny Nadiole added in the 50th minute. Long Eaton’s late consolation came from Gerome Palmer.

Town stay fourth but have two games in hand on Thackley, who they trail by just six points.

Eccleshill United returned to winning ways in Division One following a tough run.

After five games without a win, four of those being in the league, Lee Duxbury’s men cut loose with a 4-0 victory at Wayne Benn’s Hemsworth MW.

Duxbury said: “Of course it’s good to get that winning feeling back. In the last month we have played the top five in our division and higher teams in two cup ties, so it’s been difficult.

“We have also had a couple of key injuries so we have had to tamper with our usual tactics and formations.

“But we dominated both halves of this game. The conditions were difficult but we could have won by more. We should have been three up at half-time instead of two.”

Marcus Edwards netted both the first-half goals, Daniel Halowaty added the third and Conner Shefte wrapped up the scoring.

The Eagles climbed back up one place to fifth in the table thanks to the victory.
