Bradford Park Avenue boss John Deacey was delighted after his side won a “difficult” home tie against Penrith 2-1 to reach the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup.

Chris Howarth was the match-winner with a late headed goal and his effort earned high praise from his manager.

Deacey said: “I thought Chris did well. He had been moved about from wide right into the middle but he was still there at the end to win it for us with a very brave header.

“We were under the cosh at times but I knew it was going to be a difficult game against a very good side. Penrith worked really hard and defended very well but our lads gave everything.

“I thought Jason (St Juste) was fantastic when he came on. It just wasn’t happening for Chib (Chilaka), for some reason it wasn’t his day, but overall as a team I thought we did well.

“Perhaps we were a little fortunate to get the winner in stoppage time like that. I feel for Penrith a little because I know what that feels like.”

Howarth’s goal meant Avenue were spared a long trip to Cumbria for a replay.

Deacey said: “I’m mighty relieved that we don’t have to go up there on Wednesday. Penrith is a lovely place but I don’t want to go there for a midweek cup replay with so much riding on it.

“We are now in today’s draw and we will see what happens. It is good for the fans and the players and, from the club’s point of view, we all know just how much Saturday’s win helps with the finances.

“If we get a favourable draw, play to our full potential and have that bit of luck you need in the cup, we might win a few more quid. You never know.”
