Gary Jones has dismissed any talk of a “home banker” against Tranmere on Sunday and warned: Remember what happened to Man United.

City will be hot favourites to see off Ronnie Moore’s rock-bottom Rovers with another Valley Parade victory.

But skipper Jones insists that nobody in the home ranks will be viewing the game as a guaranteed three points.

He said: “It’s dangerous to think like that. There are no gimmes in this league – or anywhere.

“Look at West Brom, who went to Man United the other week and won. Nobody will have given them a chance there.

“That’s an absolutely unbelievable result and an example as to what can happen in football.

“Tranmere are fighting against relegation and this is a tough game coming up. But we’ve had a few days off to rest our legs and I’m sure we will be fired up.

“The way we are playing at the moment, I feel we can beat anyone.”

City, who have lost only once in the first ten games, can expect another bumper turn-out this weekend, even though the game had to be moved on police advice.

Over 1,300 supporters travelled to last week’s win at Walsall and Jones admitted the strength of backing is a powerful inspiration for the team.

“You see that support every week and it makes you feel ten-foot tall.

“The fans here are incredible. They’ve been trying to get a decent squad for a few years and now we’ve got it. If we’re marked men with some people, then why not? We were a good side last year and I think we’ve improved.

“We’ve got virtually the same squad but I think we’re more suited to playing at this level.

“We’ve got some very good players and some good team players as well. Mix them two together and it’s a great combination to have.

“You can see that at the moment, we’re full of confidence and we’re getting results.

“But we have to kick on. We’re not going to rest on our laurels.”

Meanwhile, Bury goalkeeper Trevor Carson has claimed that he had been lined up to join City in the summer.

The Irishman, currently on loan at Portsmouth, said: “I shook hands on a deal with Bradford and it fell through at the last minute, which sort of put me back.

“A few things happened with their budget. The centre half got injured and that became more of a priority.”

City snapped up Matt Taylor in the week leading up to the season as cover while Luke Oliver continued his rehabilitation from long-term injury.

Middlesbrough youngster Connor Ripley joined as back-up keeper until January.
