Bradford City go to Sheffield United for the penultimate game in the Northern Women's Combination League on Sunday with nothing to play for but pride.
In racing terms they fell at almost the final hurdle when, needing to win their last three games to take the title and win promotion to the FA Women's Premier League, they crashed to a 3-2 defeat at home to Huddersfield Town, despite leading with only a half-hour to go.
It was a disastrous blow to Steve Winterburn's side after such a generally successful campaign but equalling last year's third-place finish now looks the most likely outcome.
