Fairbank United have won the Spen Valley League's Sonder Heating and Ventilation Cup, defeating Soothill 2-1 after a hard-fought final.

The Bradford-based club blitzed their opponents from Dewsbury in a barnstorming opening ten minutes.

Razziq Ali opened the scoring after two minutes, latching on to a pass from Tufail Ahmed before hitting home from close range.

Then a towering header by Mohammed Shoaib after an excellent cross on the left wing by Faisal Shabir meant it was 2-0 after ten minutes.

Fairbank were so dominant that they could have been 5-0 ahead by the interval but Soothill gave themselves a foothold by scoring just before half-time.

Soothill battled harder in the second half but Fairbank then missed a penalty.

The Dewsbury side piled on the pressure but, thanks to heroics in goal from man of the match Haris Butt, Fairbank hung on for victory.

Club Captain Nisar Hussain was emotional at the final whistle, saying: "It's been a brilliant season!

"The club were awarded the West Riding County FA Chartered Standard Club of the Year earlier in the season, and now the cup win tops it off.

"I'd like to thank all my team-mates, the fans who turned out in their numbers to roar us home and to four special people in the dug-out - our manager Shazad Bashir, who's stuck by us throughout;  secretary Akif Waseem; our beloved Pakistan international Irfan Khan, who missed the final through injury; and Mazhar Iqbal, who has been at the club with me since the age of 12."

Club sponsor Rashid Bashir, of Rajas Pizza & Grill, was also delighted with the result, adding: "The team have worked hard and got what they deserved. Over the years they have come close on many occasions, which makes this victory all the sweeter!"

Co club sponsor Mr Khan, of Sky DIY in Halifax, was equally impressed, saying: "The second half was an embodiment of the club spirit.

"The chips were down and the tide turned against them, yet the team stuck together and battled their way through."

The Sonder Heating and Ventilation Cup was sponsored by Spen Valley League president Ken Wood, a former referee and league committee member for 40 years, who passed away last month. His son Mark presented the cup on his behalf.
