Charlton 2 Leeds 1
Leeds caretaker manager Neil Redfearn was disappointed with his side’s last-minute defeat but was pleased with the response of the players after Neil Warnock departed Elland Road in the week.
A late winner by Tottenham loanee Jonathon Obika sent United to their fourth successive loss in the npower Championship.
The hosts opened the scoring through Johnnie Jackson but Luke Varney equal-ised for Leeds with the game heading for a draw before Obika’s late intervention.
Redfearn said: “I thought the performance and application was good.
“I thought we were unlucky at the finish because we should have got a couple of decisions.
“From a performance point of view, I thought we went a goal down against the run of play – we were doing well up to that point.
“Whenever the manager leaves, it’s upsetting – these are players that Neil War-nock signed. But they’ve applied themselves well.
“I thought it was good performance without being spectacular. It was a poor surface.
“They will be disappointed but they’ve been professional at what they’ve done.”
Charlton’s Michael Morr-ison missed the first chance of the game from six yards out after 13 minutes, while Paul Green did poorly with his effort for the visitors.
The second half started off in the best possible way for the hosts, when Jackson took advantage of a deflection from an Andy Hughes shot three minutes after the restart to slot home his tenth goal of the campaign.
Leeds got their reply with nine minutes remaining, when substitute Varney had his effort deflected into the net.
However, Obika rose unmarked in the box deep into stoppage time to stun Leeds and push Charlton towards mid-table safety.
With the hosts earning seven points in a week, boss Chris Powell was full of praise for his side after their first stoppage-time goal this season.
He said: “I’m really pleased with the whole week, ecstatic with the performance today – we didn’t deserve to be at 1-1.
“It has been a pivotal week, to get seven points and a real gritty, dogged point at Brighton.
“We have to do these things to survive in the Championship. And there’s no better way of winning than in the last minute.”
