Ricky Ravenhill column: It wasn’t said in the dressing room but everyone knew we had to win at Torquay.
We made it difficult for ourselves by only drawing last Friday so we were well aware what was at stake. We couldn’t afford to keep drawing.
It was a big result for us and I thought we played the conditions well and did what we had to do.
Sometimes it’s frustrating that you just have to keep hooking the ball on, tackling and heading. But the conditions dictate.
You want to get the ball down and play but you can’t possibly do that with a swirling wind and heavy pitch. Fortunately we coped with the ugly side of the game better than they did.
But that’s two games on the trot we’ve had to come from behind after conceding early and that’s something we’ve got to address. It’s always an uphill battle when you do that.
It was another test of character but showed that we’ve still got that in abundance. Some teams go behind like that and just go under.
We don’t want the season to fizzle out. You wouldn’t play the game if you were happy to muddle along to the end and then get on your holidays.
We’ve had a fantastic cup run but that’s all gone now and we want to finish strongly and see how far we can go. If we can make the play-offs then so be it.
There are a lot of home games coming up now and we want to make that count. Our form at Valley Parade was really strong for the first half of the season and I think we’ve done all right there since without getting the results.
We dominated the Southend game apart from that one minute when they scored the two goals and prior to that we deserved to beat Wycombe.
Hopefully we can get that home form going and use it to our advantage.
We know what Northampton are about. They’re going to be big and strong and very direct and if the pitch isn’t the best we’ll have to dig in and do the same.
