SIR – In the past few days it has been said that to bring home our troops from Afghanistan would be an insult to the men and women that have already lost their lives in this region.
If there was the remotest chance of doing some lasting good in this or any other Middle East country, I would not hesitate to agree.
As each so-called Arab Spring demonstrates, when all the dust settles after internal revolution or western intervention these countries revert to type and are in an even worse state than before. However many more lives we sacrifice, Afghanistan will return to being ruled by the Taliban, corruption and the warlords within months of our withdrawal.
It is time our politicians learned from history and admitted that we should have never become involved in another lost cause. To not bring home some of the finest and bravest men and women our country has produced is the ultimate insult both to them and their loved ones.
