SIR – Although Councillor Debbie Davies is totally correct to be concerned about the implications of the closure of Shipley fire station for the residents of Baildon (T&A September 18), I can’t help thinking that she and her Tory colleagues are failing their constituents by not focusing their fire on the places it’s needed.
To begin with, let’s not forgot why this is an issue in the first place – cuts imposed by the Con-Dem Government.
As a resident of Baildon, I would like these so-called representatives to be writing to and lobbying the relevant Ministers, but there’s no evidence that’s happened.
Secondly, I would expect them to be meeting with the local MP and asking him why he’s not been doing more about this, and why he’s failed to agree with the Fire Brigades Union to discuss it. While I appreciate personal relations between these councillors and the MP may be somewhat strained, as members of the same political party I would have thought they’d be able to deal with this.
It’s one thing getting some ‘good publicity’ in the local press, but what’s needed over this issue is some direct and positive action.
