SIR – When it comes to spineless Lib Dem MPs cosying up to this right-wing Tory Government, there are no shortage of candidates. Until last week, I had always considered Vince Cable to be a cut above most of them.

What on earth is he doing – ‘fronting’ a shameless piece of Tory thinking which will allow employers to get rid of ‘underperforming’ employees without any of that old ‘unfair dismissal’ or ‘industrial tribunals’ nonsense?

What is worse is that he is justifying this mumbo jumbo by suggesting that such a piece of legislation will help the economy. Please – when did increasing the number of benefits claimants and denying the country income tax revenues ever benefit an economy?

Clearly Vince has never come across the concept of employers ‘downsizing.’ This is a simple device whereby employers reduce their workforce to increase profits (and make those who remain, work twice as hard.) That is the main reason why employers want the new ‘flexible’ legislation. Oh, and of course, it will also allow them to get rid of troublesome trade’s union members too. Brilliant. Thanks, Vince.
