SIR - Regarding the story about paramedics not being allowed to carry an old lady into her house (T&A, October 23), I had fairly major abdominal surgery last Friday.

When I came back from theatre, the two nurses told me they weren't allowed to lift me from the trolley to my adjacent bed.

One nurse pulled my left arm and I somehow managed to drag and shuffle myself across. It was excruciating and distressing.

I appreciate nurses and paramedics don't want to injure themselves, therefore alternative procedures should definitely be put into practice.
