It is impossible to imagine why someone would decide to throw a television off a railway bridge at a train.

Mindless doesn’t do it justice.

The potential consequences of such an act are horrendous, and yet it seems objects are being hurled off a Bradford footbridge at passing services as someone’s idea of fun.

There are also suggestions that some people are using the railway lines as a dumping ground, with mattresses and tyres left on the tracks. The police have increased patrols around Dalcross Bridge in a bid to catch the culprits in the act, and British Transport Police are renewing their efforts.

But these vandals are someone’s children, and they are carrying out these potentially deadly acts in areas where they are likely to have been seen by residents.

Ultimately, it falls on the community to try and put a stop to this sort of madness before someone is badly hurt or killed.

Someone must have seen the offenders who dragged or carried the old television set to the bridge before throwing it off. That happened at 11.44am in broad daylight.

Anyone who has seen anything that might help police catch those responsible must come forward. And parents and guardians have to take responsibility for where their children are during the day and at night.

Whether it is recklessly irresponsible fly-tipping or sheer wanton vandalism, these actions could have equally disastrous consequences.

They also show a lack of respect for the local community. It is time the local community fought back and helps to stamp out this blight on them.
