It is little wonder that the umbrella organisation for tourism across Yorkshire is asking questions of the decision by Visit England to refuse to give money to support the county as a whole whilst handing out substantial grants to two specific destinations.

Both Leeds and York have received £500,000 each from the national body to promote themselves as tourism destinations while Welcome to Yorkshire, which is responsible for the whole county, has been consistently told there will be no money for wider promotion of the area.

And while Bradford may not have the same pull as those cities in terms of bringing in tourists as the cities mentioned above, it is certainly an industry that has grown in recent years, particularly when you add areas like Haworth , Saltaire and Ilkley to the mix.

To single out the two places that are already by far the best-known destinations in the region for money to help raise their profile seems more than a little illogical.

Surely it would have made more sense to try and spread the money more fairly right across Yorkshire, or to focus on lesser-known destinations for visitors from home and abroad.

The hospitality industry in the Bradford district, and in many other towns and cities around Yorkshire that will not benefit from this cash, is a growing one, offering diversification opportunities for many people.

Everything should be done to nourish this burgeoning economic sector, and all areas should be on a level playing field in terms of receiving central money.
