SIR – In a rather desperate attempt to cash in on Team GB’s recent Olympic and Paralympic success, Messrs Cameron and Johnson have suggested that schools should organise two hours of competitive sport each day.
Unfortunately for them, all it does is give added substance to Nadine Dorries MP’s jibe that the Conservative party is run by rich boys who do not even know the price of milk.
I say this because schools like Eton, which they both attended and which are exclusively for boarders, have games sessions almost every weekday afternoon. As I know from my own experience, the main purpose was never to produce future champions but simply to fill in the time between the end of lessons and the evening meal.
Given their privileged backgrounds, it would not have occurred to the Prime Minister or the Mayor of London that for the vast majority of pupils who go home each day, there is no equivalent ‘down time’.
Consequently, the idea of adding another two hours to the school day is clearly a non-starter and yet more proof that our current rulers are completely out of touch.
