SIR – It is interesting to read of plans to demolish those ‘crime stigma’ blocks of flats at Shipley Fields, replacing them with “affordable family-sized homes”.
Perhaps these new “affordable family-sized homes” could be laid out in a series of parallel streets, called Edmund Street, Britannia Street, Clare Street, Dudley Street, Fenton Street, Rosedale Street and Darton Street, all featuring flexible, solidly-build dwellings in which hard-working families could live in neighbourly safety.
Which, of course, would take us back to exactly where we were before the Council’s enthusiastic wrecking-ball destroyed that strong community in the mid-1960s.
Funny how things can go full circle in one lifetime, ain’t it ?
