SIR – I am afraid that the readers of the letters page will be getting sick and tired of the exchange of letters between me and John Hall on the subject of Nick Clegg.

All I would say is that we should let the voters of Sheffield Hallam and other Liberal Democrat-held seats around the country have the final say. In politics that is all that matters; the voters will tell you how wrong you are and you lose your seat.

Opinion polls are irrelevant, the only thing that really matters is voters expressing their choice on the day. However, Matthew Oakshott does say that any brand that loses half its market share should look seriously at the senior management team that got them there.
