SIR – It is truly ironic that the Department for Education has decided that the One In A Million free school in Bradford is “unviable”, since the free schools are part of DfE Minister Michael Gove’s strategy of bypassing local education authorities and local accountability, putting such schools under his direct control.
No wonder the parents of the 30 pupils put down for the school are so upset.
Bradford should immediately put in place a strategy to take over the One In A Million as a properly-organised LEA school, while at the same time prioritising placements for its pupils, especially any with special needs, as is the case with Mrs East’s son, James (T&A, August 29).
Something must also be done for the teachers and staff of the proposed school, as I am sure that there are plenty of schools with significant vacancies for them to fill.
And this latest Government fiasco must be remembered when the election comes, which will not be a day too soon.
