SIR – Re “Reneging Promises” (Letters, August 22), Ian Parson’s response to my last epistle.
- Despite a “healthy” economy and well-regulated financial sector (ha-ha), it suddenly became “unreasonable” to publicly-fund increased student numbers, so Labour introduced tuition fees! Well, Ian, the “unreasonable” mess left by Labour caused senior Lib Dems to agree to Tory fee increases. Despite “terrible” cuts, debt is still growing!
- Nick Clegg cannot abolish tuition fees. Labour and Tories outnumber Lib Dems. Senior Lib Dems still aim to.
- A 15-year term for elected “peers” laughable? (as are unelected MPs!) Labour’s opposition to elected “Lords” was about embarrassing Nick Clegg, pure and simple.
- It doesn’t seem to me that Government has “declared war” on the old, (significantly increasing pensions – unlike Labour), nor on the disabled or unemployed.
- If Tories had been left to form a minority Government, they’d have called fresh elections when polls showed they’d win. (Suits you, Sir?) Our fixing five-year Parliaments should stop such “gerrymandering”.
- Economic forecasts? Government not behaving as Labour “would”? At least financial experts are happy and not rocking the boat as Labour’s misguided policies surely would.
