SIR – The average price of rail tickets is set to soar by a massive 6.2 per cent from January.

This will hit commuters hard – from the beginning of next year, even a comparatively short journey such as between Bradford and Leeds will cost an extra £56 a year for a season ticket – far more if you buy individual tickets.

We need cheaper, simpler and fairer fares. Last year the Government backed down on plans to raise fares by a similar amount. We can make them do the same again – they’ve already given a break to motorists by postponing a planned fuel duty rise.

There is still time to force them to do the same for rail passengers – support our campaign at fairfaresnow.org.uk.
