SIR – There is a current article in the railway press about the “West Riding Limited” train which ran in the 1930s from Bradford and Leeds to London until the outbreak of war.

In that article it states that “Bradford was at a disadvantage to Leeds as all its railways were at the end of what were in effect branch lines off main lines. Leeds, on the other hand, had good links to the East Coast main line.”

This, of course, continues to be the case more than 80 years later, but lessons have still not been learned, and opportunities are not taken.

The latest of these opportunities is there for all to see while the Broadway hole continues, with another big chance to complete a cross city rail link. Unfortunately, we never seem to have a Council with the necessary foresight to do what is so obviously needed for the future benefit of our city.
