SIR – In his letters (T&A, August 3 and 13), republican Kevin Wilson says we need a new national anthem as the current one is divisive and unrepresentative of many people in this country.
Two local MPs said God Save The Queen should be dropped as the national anthem for English sporting teams, but in a poll conducted by the Telegraph & Argus they were given short shrift as nearly 70 per cent of readers replied, ‘Oh, no it shouldn’t’.
If Mr Wilson watched the London Olympics it must have pained him to hear thousands, even tens of thousands at the stadium, singing with gusto God Save The Queen every time one of our 29 victorious athletes received their gold medal.
He said he would certainly never sing it.
Who cares?
