SIR – I am awe-struck, but not surprised, by the performance of the Yorkshire athletes at London 2012. Every single one of them showed true Yorkshire grit, determination and courage. The number of medals won by the county’s performers is nothing short of miraculous, and I salute each and every one.
As MEP for Yorkshire and The Humber, the character of the people I meet while out and about, whether facing the misery of floods or celebrating the many great achievements, shines through.
The success of Team GB will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come and nowhere more so than in Yorkshire where I hope the achievements of our athletes inspire young people to realise that they can fulfil their dreams, whether sporting or otherwise.
I am looking forward to returning to Brussels to boast to my colleagues about the fantastic achievements of my constituents.
Timothy Kirkhope, MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, Main Street, Scotton, North Yorkshire
