SIR – One recent Saturday morning, I went to the allotment and spent the day there (yes, the Met Mob got it wrong again). I looked around wondering where to start on the results of God’s wrath.
The most important job was to clear the potato bed before the slugs scoffed the lot (too late by far).
This year also we have been plagued by flock of collard doves and wood pigeons, which have eaten all the Brassicas (cabbage tribe) to the ground. This has happened on every plot on the site.
Could any ornithologist please explain why these pests have sprung up in such numbers this year?
Not one strawberry from a new bed I planted last year, half the runner bean plants dying off – the list goes on. For the icing on the cake, the Council wants their plot rent, and Yorkshire Water want their water charges.
I begin to understand where Mr Meat Loaf was coming from when he sang out: “Life’s a lemon, and I want my money back”.
