SIR – Adding a police box to the City Park (T&A, August 4) sounds a good idea. But wait a moment – it is painted blue. For Bradford, that can’t be right.
Bradford was an exception because the police boxes in this city were red. As a pupil at Undercliffe Infants School, I used to pass the one at the junction of Undercliffe Street and Pollard Lane four times a day. We children were intrigued by them and when a policeman was opening the door, we tried to sneak a quick look through the gap.
Over the years, people would not believe me, telling me I was wrong and that they were blue. Coun Stanley King agreed with me and he contacted the late Harold Long, who had been the assistant chief constable in Bradford.
People who lived in places such as Queensbury , Shipley and Bingley would have blue boxes because they came under West Yorkshire Council. Until, together with Keighley , they were merged with Bradford.
I believe that police in Bradford had uniforms made of a better material than such as the West Riding Police, as Bradford was the centre of the wool trade, this was for good reason.
