SIR – If MP David Ward really thinks that his constituents are ‘culturally embedded’ in insurance fraud (T&A, June 5) he must have a very low opinion of them.

I have lost count of the number of times that a new client comes in asking us about a settlement figure offered by an insurance company with whom they have been dealing direct, and which is so pathetically low that it cannot be anything other than a deliberate attempt to take account of their inexperience in such matters.

Insurers’ compensation offers in the low hundreds (or even tens) suddenly become thousands with proper legal representation.

The insurance industry likes to keep premiums high and payouts low and it has a well-oiled publicity machine to help it along the way. But for what it’s worth, my experience is that most insurance fraud comes from the companies, not their customers.
